Celebrating Nursing Home Week
May 24, 2022
Every year during the month of May, skilled nursing facilities across the country celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week. This is a week to honor the important role that skilled nursing communities play in caring for America’s seniors. The week is a special time to recognize our residents, staff, and family members who make up the special blend of our wonderful community.
You may find yourself asking, “what exactly is skilled nursing care?” Skilled nursing care refers to a patient or resident’s need for treatment that can only be performed by licensed healthcare professionals. If you or a loved one had an event, such as a recent surgery or a new worsening medical condition that resulted in hospitalization, you would then subsequently qualify for what is referred to as skilled services. This includes specialty care from Licensed Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists accordingly.
Every year, facilities choose different ways to celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week. This year, Lafayette Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation had a Disney Cruise-themed week filled with activities and entertainment. The festivities were kicked off on Monday with an “All Aboard Celebration” in which there was a cocktail party and Disney trivia. On day two, the lounge was graced by the sounds of Jeremy’s live fiddle music, followed by making Disney cookies in the activity room.
Wednesday was “Cruise Craft Day,” where the residents got to have lunch with Mickey and Minnie, followed by live piano music, and finally a showing of a Disney movie on the big screen in the lounge. On Thursday, Donald Duck lead an exercise class in the West Lounge, followed by lunch with his companion, Daisy Duck. As the cruise ship returned home on Friday, the staff provided a facility-wide cookout in which the whole Disney crew of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto helped serve and visited all of the staff and residents throughout the facility.
It was wonderful to see the genuine joy and excitement shown by both staff and residents as they were able to relive some of their fond memories from their younger days.
